Complementing the Traditional Justice System
Beginning Anew (back to top) Debuted July 1, 2008, Resolution Works is the energy, spirit, history and knowledge of the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program of Boulder County taken to the south Denver Metro area to serve the 18th Judicial District as the premier community mediation and restorative justice center. Boulder VORP had the vision to create conflict resolution programs to serve the community. In fact, they succeeded in working themselves out of business after 16 years of helping provide services and training for the citizens of Boulder, Colorado. By encompassing the skills of volunteer community members, Resolution Works delivers conflict resolution and provides training and facilitation and dialogue work as needed by the community. We bring over 50 years of combined conflict resolution and restorative justice practices to this agency and offer training to new mediators as they begin their personal journey in the world of alternate dispute resolution (ADR). We have adapted many of the core structures upon which Boulder VORP was built and achieved success, we've also added new techniques and methods as the profession and the practices grow. All processes are conducted by trained volunteers in restorative justice, mediation, facilitation, cultural competency and communication. Currently Resolution Works offers victim-offender mediation, community mediation, community group conferencing, parent/teen mediation, high risk victim offender dialogue, and peace circles. As needed Resolution Works staff and facilitators also work one on one with victims and offenders of crime.
Complementing the Traditional Justice System (back to top) The Restorative Justice model is distinct from existing justice system by addressing the harm caused by crime and seeking to redress that harm. Resolution Works is grounded on the historical methodology of bringing victim and offender together in a safe environment to discus the crime, the impact of the crime, and the type(s) of reparation desired. Restorative justice is seen as an effective added tool for professionals in the criminal justice system because of its broader social objectives and its community and victim oriented approach. Resolution Works compliments the traditional justice approach by infusing the process of administering justice with the following three restorative justice dimensions: Accountability -Offenders get to take responsibility for their actions -Offenders face the community and victims--those they have harmed -Offenders get to take steps to repair harm and make amends Competency Development -Offenders learn effective communication skills -Offenders have a chance to acknowledge their responsibility to their community and find a way to rejoin their community -Offenders learn skills to resolve conflicts other than violence or crime -Offenders have the chance to see victims as fellow humans and develop empathy Victim and Community Empowerment -Victim and community can have the offender take responsibility for the harm done -Victims and community have an opportunity to tell the offender how they feel and hear the conditions that may have led to the crime -Victims and offenders can see each other as members of their community -Victims and community get an opportunity to say how the harm should be repaired and what sanctions should be applied -Victims can regain a sense of safety, bringing healing and closure to the incident
